Certification Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is there a difference between RCCB® and RBMA or are they one in the same?
No, they are not the same. The RCCB® is a certification board and the RBMA is an association. Both are independently incorporated and have separate Boards of Directors.

Q. If I complete RBMA registration forms for exam review courses and/or conferences, am I registered for the exam?
No. You must complete the RCCB® exam application and pay a separate fee for the exam.

Q. Where do I find the Candidate Bulletin of Information for the exam?
The Candidate Bulletin of Information is found on the Home Page of this Web site in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

Q. What is the format for the exam?
The RCCB Exam will now be administered through computer based testing.

Q. Where do I find the applications forms?
The application for the exam is found on the Home Page of this Web site in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

The registration form for the RBMA exam review course can be found on the RBMA Web site, www.rbma.org, under Education, Coding Exam Review.

Q. How much does it cost to apply to sit for the exam?

Q. How do I apply to take the exam?
Download the application form on the Home Page of this Web site, complete the application, and return the application to the RCCB Office with payment by the deadline date.

Q. Does applying for the exam mean that I get to sit for the exam?
Once your application is reviewed and eligibility determined, you will receive an acknowledgement letter which is approval to sit for the exam. The acknowledgement letter will contain the reservation phone number and the time period in which you need to call to make your test site reservation.

Q. What are the application deadlines to take the exam?

Q. Will I receive a confirmation for the exam?
Yes. An acknowledgement letter will be mailed to your home address.

Q. What if I don't receive an acknowledgement?
If you do not receive an acknowledgement letter within two weeks of sending your application, contact the RCCB® office immediately at 866.227.7222 or e-mail info@rccb.org.

Q. Do I need to bring this acknowledgement letter to the exam?
No, however, the acknowledgement letter contains your ID number. You will need your ID number when you make your reservation for the test site and when you check in at the test site.

Q. Where are the test sites?
There are 20 test sites available nationwide. Please visit www.comiratesting.com/html/microtek.html for more information about the test sites.

Q. How do I make my reservation for the test site?
Your acknowledgement letter will contain the phone number to call and make your reservation. Have your ID number available for verification purposes when you call to make your reservation. The reservation line is open 6:00 am to 5:00 pm M-F and 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday (Pacific Time).

Q. Do I need to bring a photo ID to the test site?
You will need to bring two forms of identification. One must contain a photo (e.g. drivers license).

Q. What happens when I get to the test site?
You will check in, verify your identification, and be given a demo to get familiar with the software. Plan on arriving 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check in and demo.

Q. What should I study?
A list of study materials can be found in the Candidate Bulletin of Information in Adobe Acrobat format on the home page of this Web site.

Q. What time does the exam start?
Your exam start time will be determined at the time you make your reservation. There will be two time slots each open test day, based on availability: 8:00 am or 1:00 pm.

Q. What will be provided at the exam?
The current year's CPT and ICD-9 books. These books are yours to keep after the exam.

Q. What can I take into the exam room?
No personal belongings are allowed in the testing room.

Q. How long is the exam?
Four (4) hours are given to answer 200 questions.

Q. When will I know the results?
Results are mailed within 6 to 8 weeks following the exam.

Q. Where do you send my results?
Your exam results will be sent to your home address provided on your exam application.

Q. Can I call to get my results?
To protect the confidentiality of your test results, no test results will be given over the phone.

Q. Why does it take so long to get the exam results?
All exams are scored and rigorously evaluated for examiner and examination accuracy to both insure the integrity of the exam and protect the individual examinees.

Q. Will my employer be notified of my score?
Not unless you notify them of your results. Your results will be mailed to your home address.

Q. Will I receive my numeric score?
Scores are provided only to candidates and only to those who do not pass the exam. This information is provided to assist in deciding whether to retake the exam and how to plan study efforts for future exams.

Q. Can I retake the exam?
Yes. There is no limit to the number of times you may apply for and take the test. If you do not succeed in passing the test after three attempts, you will be required to show proof of courses or seminars totaling 25 CEUs specific to radiology coding taken to remedy deficiencies. Please see the Candidate Bulletin of Information, page 13, for more information.

Q. When does my certification expire?
RCC certification is valid for a two-year period. For example, if you certify in July 2004, your certification will expire at the end of July 2006. You must recertify before the expiration date.

Q. What if my certificate becomes lost or I have a change of name?
There is a $10 replacement fee for a copy of your RCC certificate.
